Expertise

Rachel has been highly regarded as a private client expert for many years by clients and other professionals.  She has excellent working relationships with accountants, investment brokers, financial advisers and other lawyers.  She has over 25 years’ experience of dealing with wills, trusts and wider succession issues for individuals and families.  She advises on structures to pass on wealth and businesses in tax efficient and family-appropriate ways.  She often acts for several generations of the same family, providing a “virtual private office” service.

Rachel acts as a trustee for many private trusts and a small number of charities, and also advises professional and lay trustees on their duties.

Matters Rachel has dealt with include:

  • The negotiation and creation of family charters or constitutions, which can govern how family assets are managed across the generations.
  • Advising on succession planning for business owners wanting to achieve fairness between children who work in the business and children who do not.
  • Working with family investment companies, trusts and LLPs to manage complex assets.
  • Creating structures to manage wealth following the sale of a business.
  • Variation of Trusts Act Applications in the High Court.

The current edition of Chambers High Net Work Guide, a key publication for the international private wealth market, ranks the Trusts, Wills and Estates team (led by Rachel) in Band 1 for private wealth law (York, Hull and surrounds).  In addition, the team is recognised in the guide’s National Leaders (outside London) rankings for the first time this year (2021).  Chambers is one of the leading independently researched guides to the legal profession.  The team is also ranked by Legal 500 UK.
