Cake but no Party for Law Firm’s 125th Birthday

Raworths, the Harrogate law firm, was recently faced with a dilemma. One hundred and sixty guests including present and retired staff and their families were invited to a garden party and barbeque at Grove House in Harrogate to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the founding of the firm in 1887. Four days before, the Met Office forecast torrential rain and high winds for the evening of the big birthday party, presenting senior partner, Christopher Butterworth with a dilemma: to postpone or not to postpone?

“We are often sceptical about the accuracy of weather forecasting in this country and sometimes with good reason, but since we have been sloshing around in wellies and macs for most of the summer so far, we decided to rely on the Met Office and postpone. We wanted everyone to enjoy the event, and trying to have fun on soaking grass when it’s cold, wet and windy just wasn’t going to work.  Having decided to cancel, I have to admit that this is one occasion when I prayed for bad weather and the forecasters got it spot on.”

So instead of a garden party celebration on an English summer evening, staff at least got to enjoy the magnificent birthday cake – even if it was inside at the firm’s Station Parade offices. The garden party and barbeque at Grove House is now being planned again for later in the year.
