Ralph studied law at St Catharine’s College, Cambridge. He trained at chancery firm Trower Still and Keeling in London and was admitted as a solicitor in 1977. He moved to dealing with general litigation in private practice and local government in East Anglia. He was a partner and head of litigation at Archer & Archer in Ely, Cambridgeshire, and was with Ward Hadaway in Darlington and Newcastle before joining Raworths. He is a member of the Agricultural Law Association, the former NFU county branch solicitor for Cambridgeshire, and is a member of the Vice-Chancellor’s Chancery and Mercantile Court Users’ Committee.
