What is the biggest change you have seen to the delivery of legal services in your career ?
I believe that it has to be the developments in technology which we have seen over the years that has resulted in transactions proceeding at a greater speed. The profession is also more competitive than it once was. Whether all the changes our profession has seen result in a better service to the client I am not sure !
What one transaction in your career stands out in your memory ?
It has to be a very large sale of a group of companies with business interests throughout Europe to a large PLC.
What part of your role do you enjoy the most ?
It is the cut and thrust of the negotiations and getting a good outcome for the client. It still gives me a buzz.
How has the business community in Harrogate changed in the last 30 years of your practice in town ?
I think the sad reality is that there is not the close ties between the professionals and the intermediaries that there used to be. For example, banks are national if not international organisations with a very different approach to business than in days gone by. It is the same with many other areas of business and the local tie is not as great.
What do you think was the most obvious benefit of your former firm’s merger with Raworths ?
We were very conscious of the way the delivery of legal services was moving more to particular specialisations and we wanted to ensure that our clients had access to all the specialist areas of practice. We also wanted to ensure that when we retire our clients have formed relationships with our new team members.
What do you like best about living and working in Harrogate ?
I have lived the best part of my life in Harrogate. It’s layout and sense of style means that it is a very comfortable place to live, eat and socialise.
What do you like doing in your spare time ?
Golf, socialising with friends, watching cricket and hockey and getting more familiar with technology
