Leading Yorkshire law firm Raworths LLP has chosen Yorkshire Cancer Research as its sole charity partner for the next 12 months.
The North Yorkshire legal practice, established in 1885, hopes to raise thousands of pounds for the regional cancer charity which helps Yorkshire people beat cancer and ensures more than 200 internationally-recognised Yorkshire scientists and clinicians remain employed in their fight against cancer.
Jonathan Mortimer, partner and head of dispute resolution at Raworths LLP, said: “There are so many extremely worthy national, international and regional charities out there but we’ve decided to raise funds for a local charity that save lives here in Yorkshire.
“So many people continue to be affected by this terrible disease in one way or another and it is shocking to learn that 259 people still die each week from cancer in Yorkshire alone where survival rates remain lower than the UK average.
“National charities and funders mainly concentrate their efforts in the south where collectively over half of the UK’s cancer research is funded,” he added.
“But Yorkshire Cancer Research is helping to make some major medical breakthroughs in the region and is making a real difference to people’s lives. Our staff, clients and partners will be organising wine tasting events, coffee mornings, art exhibitions and much more over the next 12 months to raise as much money for the charity as possible.”
Mark Stevens, Chief Executive of Yorkshire Cancer Research said: "We’re honored to be working in partnership with Raworths LLP. The need for Yorkshire’s business community to support Yorkshire’s cancer research excellence has never been stronger, coming at a time when some national charities and the government are making cutbacks in the region.
“Thanks to the amazing generosity of our supporters, last year we were able to buck the national trend and increase our spend on research in Yorkshire by over 50 per cent.
“Now we would like to help more Yorkshire people beat cancer, and hopefully we can achieve this with the help of corporate partners such as Raworths LLP.”
